Some of the city's largest grain handlers are partnering up, and the result will be another vacant terminal on the Thunder Bay waterfront.
Cargill and Parrish and Heimbecker announced a joint venture with the hope of making both companies stronger. The deal will result in no job losses according to Cargill and the United Steelworkers.
But the P&H terminal located next to Keefer Terminal will cease operations, with all employees moving over to the Cargill operation off Darrell Avenue.
About 45 employees currently work at the two terminals.
Len Penner, President of Cargill, says in a statement that "both terminals have been underutilized in past years," adding that this deal will help build a long-term sustainable business.
USW President Herb Daniher says he believes the partnership will make the two companies stronger and a more fierce competitor.
He added that the deal is a result of deregulation of the grain market and the phasing out of the wheat board.
