Grand Portage Lodge and Casino is betting a multi-million dollar renovation will bring in more visitors from north of the border.

The two-decade-old casino is set for a facelift that will modernize the gambling floor and bring back blackjack tables, which haven't been part of its offerings for more than 10 years.

"We're really excited to do this," said Grand Portage marketing manager Frank Vecchio. "We've been working on this project for a year and a half and we've finally got it going."

The exterior will be rebuilt with a rustic facade, restaurant space will be upgraded and hotel accommodations will cater to patrons looking for suites and more luxurious space.

Vecchio said the casino is using the project to position its marketing at both Canadian and American patrons.

"Our primary market is Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario. During the summer months, our U.S. travelers come and see our attractions. You have to keep in mind, we have some state attractions and national attractions that visitors like to come to."

Renovations are expected to be completed in spring of 2017.
