THUNDER BAY -- Local field naturalists are looking to purchase a plot of land land in Terrace Bay to serve as a nature reserve.
The property, which is a 1,200 acre parcel along the Lake Superior shoreline, is owned by Terrace Bay Pulp. The mill. however, is now in creditor protection.
Committee Chair of the Thunder Bay Field Naturalists Susan Bryan says the land they’re interested in was originally marketed for cottages, but they have a better plan.
“Visitors flock to this area to see these sites,” she said in an interview with CKPR Radio. “If it became cottage lots and marina developments all the way along then Terrace Bay would be the loser.
“I think for the public, and for the community itself, this is the best possible plan.”
The land includes shoreline between Hydro Bay and the mouth of the Aguasabon River along with 15 small islands just offshore.
The purchase is expected to close on July 15.
The Mayor of Terrace Bay is also looking at some of the mill’s property with interest.
Jody Davis says the town hopes to purchase the golf course as well as a chunk of the waterfront.
