THUNDER BAY — The federal government will spend up to $800,000 on improvements to the commercial fishing jetties and boat launch at the mouth of the Current River in Thunder Bay.

Thunder Bay-Superior North MP Patty Hajdu made the announcement Tuesday on behalf of Bernadette Jordan, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard.

The rehabilitation project includes:

  • replacing concrete decks on each jetty
  • installing new safety bollards, fenders and ladders
  • replacing light standards and electrical feeds
  • installing new water service to jetties one, two and three
  • replacing the launch ramp
  • regrading the parking lot

The government said it's consulting city officials and members of the fishing community to ensure the improvements meet their needs.

The project is part of a country-wide $300 million program to upgrade small craft harbours.

Hajdu said the local investment will result in safer infrastructure for local fish harvesters and small craft.
