Hammarskjold High School students will be back in class Tuesday.
The school was closed Monday to clean up trace amounts of lead found in lockers.
“The cleanup has been completed,” Lakehead Public Schools director Cathi Siemieniuk said. “There were some traces of lead in the dust from the primer not the paint.”
The lockers, walls ceilings and even stairwells near the school’s science and business wing were cleaned. Air quality tests show that lead was only found on surfaces, not in the air itself. Siemieniuk said the school is very safe.
“Everything’s been cleaned and we’ve very confident that we’re ready to roll for tomorrow,” she said.
The board will now be reviewing its maintenance protocols for all schools in the system when lockers are being painted. No reports of illness were received.
The lead was discovered Friday during a professional development day.
While staff were at work, no students were at the school
