THUNDER BAY — Ontario's Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC) says it continues to monitor operations at Hogarth Riverview Manor to ensure the nursing home is complying with the Long-Term Care Homes Act.

As yet, however, no date has been announced for rescinding the mandatory management order the ministry issued to St. Joseph's Care Group (SJCG), the owner of the 544-bed facility last fall.

Extendicare Assist, the consulting arm of long term-term care home operator Extendicare, was brought in to manage day-to-day operations after the ministry said Hogarth Riverview had "ongoing non-compliance with resident care requirements, protecting residents from abuse, not following plans of care and not meeting reporting obligations" to the ministry.

In a tbnewswatch.com article published last week, SJCG President Tracey Buckler said the involvement of Extendicare staff in daily operations has fallen significantly since the order was issued, because the company is now confident in the nursing home management's ability to run the facility.

Buckler described Extendicare's ongoing role as providing "support and assistance."

An MOHLTC spokesperson confirmed to tbnewswatch.com that the ministry has noted "improvement and compliance with outstanding orders previously issued" to SJCG since Extendicare Assist was brought on board.

However, he said Extendicare will continue to manage the home "until St. Joseph's Care Group has satisfied the ministry that steps have been taken to comply with all outstanding compliance orders."

The spokesperson added "The licensee must then demonstrate that they can also sustain compliance."
