The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre has been ranked one of the top 40 research hospitals in Canada.
Since the Regional Research Institute was founded in 2008, scientists have secured more than $12 million in grant funding for medical research.
The regional hospital was ranked 40th in the first-ever ranking by Research Infosource.
Officials with the Research Institute said the ranking validates the facility as an important contributor to academic medicine, something they say people in the region should be proud of.
The grant funding secured in recent years has largely been used for research in medical imaging.
Wood added that the top 40 ranking means the regional hospital is among the elite in Canada doing research.
The hospital faced stiff competition from hundreds of other hospitals for research revenues.
