THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit reported five new confirmed cases of COVID-19 Sunday.
The number of active cases in the district dropped by two, to 143, thanks to seven newly resolved cases. That figure has dropped significantly since hitting an all-time high of 186 active cases on Friday.
Four of the cases announced Sunday involve individuals in the Thunder Bay area: three were associated with an outbreak at the Thunder Bay District Jail, and another with an outbreak at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre.
Both institutions have seen well over 60 people infected, prompting the transfer of some prisoners from the jail to a Toronto detention centre.
The other case announced Sunday was in an unspecified First Nation in the district.
The health unit reported no new deaths or hospitalizations from the virus Sunday, after a 27th fatality attributed to COVID-19 was announced Saturday. One district resident remains in hospital with the virus.
The province reported 1,848 new cases Sunday, and 49,400 tests completed.
