Health unit issues guidance for second dose booking

Those who received Moderna vaccine will book through separate process due to limited supply.

THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit has issued instructions for individuals turning 80 or older this year on how to book second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

That group is eligible to book their second dose as of 8 a.m. on Monday, after the province accelerated its previous timeline.

However, those who received the Moderna vaccine will book through a separate process that will be made available later in the day, the health unit advised in a statement issued Sunday evening.

Those 80-plus who received the Pfizer vaccine can book as of 8 a.m. Monday through the provincial booking system or by calling 1-833-943-3900.

The online link for the Moderna second dose clinics will be provided on the health unit’s website by the afternoon on Monday, the agency said.

Appointments for second doses will be available beginning the week of June 21 for those who received the Pfizer vaccine, and on the week of June 28 for those who received the Moderna vaccine.

The discrepancy is due to timing issues with supply of the Moderna vaccine, the health unit said.

“At this time, TBDHU cannot guarantee that Moderna vaccine will be available the week of June 21,” it stated.

Federal officials have recently indicated they expect the company to deliver millions fewer doses than it had promised by the end of June, as it struggles to ramp up production at plants in Europe.

The guidance applies to those who had their first appointment at the CLE Coliseum through the TBDHU Immunization Clinic.

Further information on accessing second doses will be provided in the coming days, the health unit said, including what to do for individuals who do not know what vaccine they received for their first dose.
