THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit has reported a second death related to COVID-19 in a week, after several months with no fatalities tied to the virus.

The health unit reported the district’s 66th COVID-19 death on Thursday, along with two new cases of the virus.

Both cases involved Thunder Bay-area residents, and were attributed to close contact with a previously identified case.

There were 13 active cases of COVID-19 identified across the district as of Thursday, unchanged from the previous day, with one district resident in hospital with the virus.

The health unit had recorded the district’s first COVID-19 death since June last week, on Nov. 11. The total of 66 deaths attributed to COVID-19 since the pandemic began includes those in which the virus was a contributing or underlying factor, the health unit states.

There have been 46 cases reported so far in November, the most since June, which saw 102.

Ninety per cent of district residents 12 and older were fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to numbers reported Tuesday by the TBDHU.
