THUNDER BAY — Environment Canada is predicting heavy rainfall for the city and has issued a heavy rain warning.
Starting Tuesday afternoon and continuing through Wednesday evening, close to 50mm of rain is estimated to fall, and residents will experience winds gusting to 70 km/h.
Trudy Kidd is a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada and said the rain will be a result of a strong, low-pressure system coming from the south.
"It's just packing a whole lot of moisture with it. Because it's moving northwards, that's why we're going to get a lot of rain with it because it's going to stay over certain areas for quite a while."
She said to also expect thunderstorms overnight with the low pressure system, which will carry strong easterly winds gusting up to 70 km/h, to develop late Tuesday and diminish Wednesday evening.
The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority is warning that heavy downpours can cause flash floods and localized flooding in low-lying areas.
They issued a flood watch for Thunder Bay and the municipalities and townships of Neebing, Oliver Paipoonge, Shuniah, O'Connor, Conmee, Gillies, and Dorion.
"The public is advised to pay attention to local forecasts and exercise caution in and around area waterways. High flows and unstable slippery banks could be dangerous. Additionally, never drive through flooded roads."
