UPDATED: Two transport trucks and a passenger vehicle involved in Highway 17 collision

Traffic was blocked at Nipigon and at Rossport after a collision involving multiple vehicles

NIPIGON — A multi-vehicle collision 60 kilometres east of Nipigon late Tuesday morning forced the closure of part of the Trans-Canada Highway north of Lake Superior.

Ontario Provincial Police said the collision involved two transport trucks and a passenger vehicle, and that there were injuries to an unspecified number of people.

According to the Schreiber fire department, one person was airlifted to Thunder Bay while two others were taken to hospital in Terrace Bay. 

Ontario 511 initially reported at 11:47 a.m. that traffic was blocked in both directions on the stretch of Highway 17 between Nipigon and Rossport.

The Schreiber fire department said the collision occurred two kilometres west of Pays Plat.

The Terrace Bay fire department also responded.

The highway remained closed until further notice late Tuesday afternoon.

Police advised motorists to avoid the area and to use an alternate route.
