THUNDER BAY – A 72-year-old man has been rushed to the hospital with serious injuries following a highway crash on Wednesday afternoon.
Highway 61 remains closed between Neebing Avenue and Arthur Street as police continue to investigate the crash, which involved an electric bike, transport truck and pickup truck.
Few details are known at this time, but police at the scene say the crash began when the driver of the e-bike heading north attempted to change lanes. That driver didn’t notice a tractor trailer in the lane he was taking and was struck by the vehicle from behind.
Police say the e-bike driver was ejected from his vehicle over the handlebars and into oncoming traffic.
The man driving the e-bike was then clipped by a pickup truck, which was travelling at speed at the time of the crash.
Police said the pickup truck driver did try to avoid colliding with the man.
Five police vehicles have left the scene, escorting an ambulance heading to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.
The public can still access the airport via alternate routes.
Police said it was too soon to determine if charges are warranted, but noted electronic bikes are not allowed on the highway. They were still attempting to conclusively determine the type of vehicle the injured man was riding.
