THUNDER BAY -- Two people are dead following a fiery highway crash on Saturday night.
Ontario Provincial Police say the crash occurred at about 10:15 p.m. at Sistonens Corner, the intersection of Highway 11/17 and Highway 102. Two occupants of a transport truck involved in the crash died. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene while the driver died in hospital.
Police say four occupants of the other vehicle, a pick-up truck towing a fifth-wheel, were taken to hospital with non life=threatening injuries, including a four-year old who was flown to a London, Ont. hospital for treatment of their injuries.
A witness described it as a horrific crash.
"(I) got to the scene used the lights from the truck to shine on the carnage. It was like a bomb just exploded. I got out diesel fuel every where and ran to the carnage," Denis Bresolin wrote on his Facebook page early on Sunday.
Bresolin said the pick-up truck was upside down and he managed to help pull all four occupants out, but the transport was too badly damaged to get the driver, who was still alive at the time, out to safety.
The crash closed the highway overnight, through it opened to one lane of alternating traffic on Sunday, reopening in both directions at about 2:40 p.m.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
