Pioneer Ridge Home for the Aged Media Release

October 31 – Thunder Bay is the fortunate recipient of two Canada 150 Celebration Gardens distributed to 150 applicants across Canada by the Canadian Garden Council.

Pioneer Ridge Home for the Aged, along with Thunder Bay’s Soroptimist International Friendship Gardens, were chosen out of 400 applications to receive 1,000 red and white tulips symbolically honoring Canada’s approaching milestone birthday.

“We feel very proud to be creating a garden that will continue to embrace our community connections with our residents, families, staff, youth and children,” said Lee Mesic, Pioneer Ridge Administrator.

“This comes as a welcome addition to our newly developed Butterfly Memory Garden which was completed this year to honor the close of the Dawson Court and Grandview Lodge Homes.”

A planting celebration attended by local dignitaries and residents, families, youth and volunteers from Pioneer Ridge, Grace Remus Childcare Centre, St. Ignatius High School took place at Pioneer Ridge’s Butterfly Memory Garden on Thursday, Oct. 27.

The Celebration Garden serves as a symbol of friendship and national kindness, principles valued by the Pioneer Ridge Home. The garden addition complements Pioneer Ridge’s commitment to being a premier provider of long term care and senior services.

The City would like to extend thanks to all the dedicated staff and volunteers who participated in the planning.

Vesey’s Bulbs of PEI generously donated the tulip bulbs for the Celebration Gardens program. Other sponsors include Canadian Garden Council, Canada Post, Canadian Nursery Landscape Association, Niagara Parks Commission, Garden Making magazine, Landscape Ontario, Ontario Garden Council, Baxter Travel Media, Enterprise Canada, Gardens BC, Québec Gardens Association and VIA Rail Canada.
