THUNDER BAY – Geraldton’s Samantha Woods purchased tickets for the Thunder Bay 50/50 lottery because of her four dogs – and now she has more than two million reasons to celebrate.

This marks the hospital foundation’s 12th consecutive millionaire in a row.

“I bought tickets because of the 'Dog Days of Summer,' and with having four dogs myself, I thought it might bring us some luck," said Woods, who works as a personal support worker at the Geraldton District Hospital.

“I was hoping maybe I’d win one of the early bird prizes, but never expected the jackpot.”

Woods plans to pay off the rest of her debt, invest, and help her sisters.

In August, the hospital foundation introduced new elements based on feedback from supporters. For the first time, the foundation held early bird draws every weekday, giving participants more chances to win.

Combined with the 'Dog Days of Summer' campaign, which saw over 2,000 pet photos submitted, these enhancements added a fun and engaging element to this month’s 50/50 draw.

“Introducing the summer bonus ticket and early bird draws every weekday in August created a new level of excitement,” said Glenn Craig, president and CEO of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation.

“With so many draws, we had a lot of calls to make – yes, we personally call each and every winner. It was uplifting to hear their excitement and gratitude, even if they weren’t the grand prize winner. These personal connections make our lottery special and highlight the positive impact we’re making together.”

The foundation is kicking things off in September with $40,000 in early birds in just the first week and a total of $75,000 in early birds throughout the month. The grand prize draw happens Friday, Sept. 27. Purchase tickets online at www.thunderbay5050.ca or at the 50/50 Store in Intercity Shopping Centre.
