THUNDER BAY – Local hospitals are reaping the benefits after dedicated fundraising efforts raised millions to support crucial new medical equipment and other improvements.
The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation announced Wednesday evening it had issued over $4.1 million in grants to the Thunder Bay Health Sciences Centre, as well as other hospitals throughout the region.
That sum was raised through the foundation’s popular 50/50 draw, as well as other donations.
“The success of the 50/50 draw allowed us to fund more grants than ever before,” said foundation president Glenn Craig. “We’re going to be able to purchase some vital equipment and make facility improvements that will really benefit both patients and staff.”
In total, 28 grants ranging from $5,000 to $1,000,000 were approved, funding everything from new echocardiography machines to automated medication dispensing units to MRI-compatible VR goggles for children.
Regional hospitals in Kenora, Dryden, Fort Frances, Terrace Bay, and Marathon will benefit from the grants.

Tickets for the foundation’s November 50/50 draw close at 11:59 p.m. Thursday.
