THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation officials are warning the public about a potential scam alert associated with their highly successful Thunder Bay 50/50 draw.

According to a release sent on Thursday, some cell phone owners are receiving a text message from an unknown number claiming to be associated with the draw, indicating they are the winner of a bonus prize.

Foundation officials urge the public not to click the link and delete the message, noting it is not them while adding they only contact 50/50 winners through a phone call, never via text.

Ticket sales close at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday for the jackpot, which has soared past $650,000 in September, bringing the total amount raised to more than $5 million.

September’s jackpot is already the third highest to date since the lottery began at the start of the year, and will likely wind up in the No. 2 slot, currently $664,885 given out in March. The inaugural winner took home $965,715 in February.

Tickets are available at www.thunderbay5050.ca. Ticket buyers must be in Ontario at the time of purchase.

The jackpot will be drawn for on Friday morning.
