Hundreds of kids hunt for Easter eggs at the Slovak Legion

Over the Easter long weekend, upwards of 1,000 children collected eggs laid out on some of the green space at the Slovak Legion.

THUNDER BAY — On Friday of the Easter long weekend, over 13,000 eggs were packed with goodies for hundreds of children to find at the Slovak Legion.

Chris Holland, one of the Kinsmen's organizers, said the group is happy to hold the free event every year.

"That's our mantra, to provide and give back to the community. And I mean, just seeing the crowd that's out there, we expect 800 to 1000 kids. So, every year, it's a huge event, and people talk about it. It's really cool to give back to the community."

Speaking to some young egg hunters, Brian said he loves coming every year.

"This was my favourite Easter event because of the big hill. It was probably the funnest day of my life."

Another participant, Temperance, talked about her strategy for egg hunting.

"I have two strategies: go straight for the middle on big piles and just try to hide some underneath and grab as much as you can with both of your hands."

While most eggs were filled with treats, some had prize tickets in them.

With a winning egg in each age category, prize eggs had a ticket that said "congratulations," and the winner received a bike.

Holland said the Kinsmen expected between 800 and 1,000 children to participate.
