THUNDER BAY -- More than 17,000 people used Thunder Bay's Regional Food Distribution Association this year.
These numbers come from the Ontario Association of Food Banks hunger report, which was released Monday morning.
Executive Director Volker Kromm says the high cost of living in the city can be attributed to the increase in people served.
“The economy is turning around here in Thunder Bay, but for the bottom quarter of our population it’s a pretty tough place,” Kromm said.
“It’s really hard to live on minimum wage. In some of those retail sector jobs and part-time jobs they are exposed to, so we are still seeing the working poor coming through our doors.”
Thunder Bay ranks among the highest cities in Ontario with 16 per cent of the population being served by food banks.
