THUNDER BAY – Jeff Hunter’s memorable golf season just keeps getting better and better.
The 33-year-old fired an even-par 72 on Monday at Whitewater Golf Club to earn a runaway victory at the Teleco District Amateur, finishing with a 3-under 212 total to best his nearest competitor, Jeremy Kirk, by nine strokes.
Hunter’s win gives him a local career grand slam, capturing the Strathcona Invitational earlier this year to go along with a 2023 triumph at the Better Ball event and a 2012 win at the District Open.
“It was a good, good summer,” Hunter said.
“I played some good golf, shot some good scores. You sign up wanting to be here talking to you guys.”
Hunter shot a two-under 70 on Saturday to open the tournament at Strathcona Golf Course, then came back with a one-under 70 on Sunday at Chapples, giving him a four-stroke lead heading into the final round.
He ran away with it on Monday.
Kirk, who started the day tied with Cody Bruchkowski for second place, played a solid round, but when all was said and done, carded a two-over 74, unable to gain ground on Hunter.
“He played great, so he deserves it,” Kirk said.
“I drove it well and hit my irons well, especially in the wind at Chapples and Strathcona the first two days. I wish a few more putts fell, but that’s golf.”
Kevin Jackson shot a three-over 75 on Monday to take solo third, 10 shots behind the leader. Four-time Amateur champion Barry Caland and Robert Atatise tied for fourth at 224, nine over par for the tournament.”
