THUNDER BAY – The (in-person) version of the Hymers Fall Fair was cancelled this year and will be replaced by a mostly virtual version of the fair.

The village of Hymers, close to Thunder Bay, Ontario, hosts the Hymers Fall Fair every year, but this year as well as last year, organizers have had to come up with a way to hold the fair in a safe way during the pandemic.

“Because of the COVID setbacks and everything else, and the uncertainty, and having to book everything four or five months in advance, we decided that we’d step back this year, to go more virtual again this year,” Lawrence Prystanski, first vice-president of the Hymers Fair agricultural society, said in an interview,

“We are still having a fair, but, more online and trying to enhance that fall fair feeling with little things like competitions online with colouring for the kids with different classes and categories to enter exhibits in, again scaled down because of the COVID.”

The Hymers Fall Fair Virtual portion will feature an online concert, art/drawing exhibit competitions, a 50/50 draw, and a horse show that will be streamed live on the Hymers Fall Fair Facebook page.

The art/drawing exhibit competitions will be a colouring contest, photo contests, a scarecrow contest, the biggest pumpkin contest, a strangest gourd, pumpkin or zucchini contest, the best poem contest, a best short story, a best outdoor fall display contest and a pandemic pet photo contest.

The horse shows are on Sept. 5 and Sept. 6, gates open at 7:15 a.m.

There will still be an in-person market featuring many local vendors that will be held at the Da Vinci Centre, 340 Waterloo Street South,  on Sept. 19  from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
