THUNDER BAY — The Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker, the Samuel Risley, has returned to the Thunder Bay Harbour.
The large metal vessel arrived on Jan. 1 and as of this moment, it is manoeuvring through the Bay.
The Port of Thunder previously stated that recent warmer weather in the port was beneficial moving into the final two weeks of the season as it would not likely need to call in an icebreaker to get the vessels in and out of port.
However, a spell of colder weather has led to freezing conditions in the Bay.
Environment Canada forecasted a low of -18 C for Monday, with temperatures expected to warm up over the weekend and dip back to -17 C early next week.
The Port of Thunder Bay said it expects to see the return of an icebreaker again this spring, closer to the opening of navigation, despite warmer temperatures.
Although the authority added naturally, 'things may change.'
It expects the icebreaker to stick around Thunder Bay until the Soo Locks close on Jan. 15.
