THUNDER BAY — Preparations are underway for the 2022 shipping season in Thunder Bay.

The Canadian Coast Guard says the icebreaker Samuel Risley is expected to start carrying out icebeaking operations on or around Tuesday, March 22.

In an announcement Wednesday, the Coast Guard advised recreational users to stay off the ice while the Risley is making channels for ships to get into and out of the harbour.

It also said caution should be exercised after operations are complete because the ice will remain unstable.
