THUNDER BAY — A Juno Award winning Indigenous artist will be headlining Canada Day celebrations on the waterfront this year.
The city of Thunder Bay announced on Thursday that Aysanabee will perform at Canada Day on the waterfront on July 1, 2024.
Aysanabee is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and singer-songwriter who made history as the first Indigenous artist to win the Juno Award for alternative album of the year and songwriter of the year.
An Oji-Cree artist and part of the Sucker Clan of Sandy Lake First Nation, Aysanabee also has connections to Thunder Bay and the region having spent time living just north of the city.
He has performed at more than 200 shows across Canada and the world, including the Ottawa Bluesfest, Osheaga, and Wake the Giant.
“Aysanabee’s performance this Canada Day marks a significant milestone for the event," said Louisa Costanzo, supervisor - Cultural Development, Community Programming and Events.
“The event has undergone a transition over the past few years, moving forward in an inclusive and meaningful way. This year’s event will continue that direction, celebrating our culturally diverse community.”
Aysanabee has shared the stage with The National, Sam Roberts Band and more. He is currently promoting his latest EP, Here and Now.
Canada Day at the waterfront takes place from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on July 1 at Marina Park. Aysanabee will take the stage at 5 p.m., closing off the event. For more information, visit www.thunderbay.ca/canadaday.
