THUNDER BAY -- An impaired driver's attempt to flee from his arresting officers didn’t pay off.
An officer with the Thunder Bay Police Service stopped the driver of a pickup just after midnight Friday. The officer noticed the truck being driven at a high rate of speed eastbound on Red River Road
Police say the officer asked the man, believed to be impaired at the time, to get out of the vehicle on High Street near Hillcrest Park.
But the man struggled when the police officer attempted to handcuff him during the arrest.
Police say the driver ran into nearby yards.
The man was eventually apprehended by other officers who arrived in the area to assist with the search.
A 27-year-old Thunder Bay man is now charged with impaired driving, failing to provide a breath sample, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.
The suspect remains in custody and will appear in court on Oct. 27.
