Improper disposal of ash likely caused Dufferin St. housefire

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue urges care with the disposal of ashes in the aftermath of a housefire on Thursday afternoon.

THUNDER BAY — No one was injured in a Dufferin Street housefire Thursday afternoon, which was likely caused by the improper disposal of wood ash.

According to Kevin Anderson, acting division chief of fire prevention for Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, firefighters believe a pail of ash left on the home's porch was the cause of the blaze. It is believed the fire was accidental.

Most of the damage was to the exterior of the house, with some to the interior.

Anderson urges anyone disposing of ash to use caution, particularly with ashes that are still warm, and to be sure to use a non-combustible container placed away from any combustible materials, ideally outside.
