Inquest into murder-suicide case denied

An inquest has been denied by the Regional Coroner's office into the murder of Antoinette Lavoie. Lavoie was shot to death in her Murillo home last December by her husband, who then took his own life.

An inquest has been denied by the Regional Coroner's office into the murder of Antoinette Lavoie.

Lavoie was shot to death in her Murillo home last December by her husband, who then took his own life.  Now, several women's groups are speaking out and saying the murder could have been prevented.

Members of the Northwestern Ontario Women's Centre sent a letter to the regional coroner asking for an inquest surrounding the death of Lavoie.

Co-ordinator Gwen O'Reilly said there was a history of physical violence in the family and believes the justice system failed in keeping Lavoie safe.

Coroner Dr. Michael Wilson has responded, saying he does not believe an inquest would be beneficial in this situation.

He added that a jury would not be in a position to make recomendations to prevent a similar death.

O'Reilly said she is disappointed with the decision.

Wilson notes that this is not the end of the line for the case.

He's sent the file to the Ontario coroner's Domestic Death Review Committee to determine if further action should be taken.
