Intersection to get new street lights

Four-way stop isn't the only new feature at the intersection of Court and Pearl streets.

The intersection of Court and Pearl Street is now a four-way stop.

THUNDER BAY – A new four-way stop at the intersection of Court and Pearl streets will also get new streetlights.

Previously, the intersection was a two-way stop for drivers travelling on Pearl Street.

City of Thunder Bay project engineer, Brian Newman, said that last year single poles were put in place, but had a metallic finish.

“We were always going to swap it out for the black finish to match the rest of the downtown. So, we currently need those poles at Memorial (Avenue) and John (Street). We're swapping those out for the final black decorative period style poles,” Newman said.

The engineering division's final assessment of the Court and Pearl intersection found a four-way stop would be more efficient for changing traffic patterns in the neighbourhood and providing better routing options for transit operations.

Newman also pointed out that they have received comments about how dark the intersection gets at night.

To fix that, the intersection will also get new decorative street lights to brighten the area.

“They're working today on that as well. So, hopefully, by early to mid next week, we will have some lights down here to help with the earlier darkness, and safety as well,” said Newman.
