THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay-Atikokan MPP Judith Monteith-Farrell has confirmed her intention to run again under the New Democratic Party banner in the 2022 provincial election.
Monteith-Farrell ousted Liberal incumbent Bill Mauro by just 81 votes in 2018 to win her first term.
She is the only approved candidate at an upcoming nomination meeting held by the NDP’s Thunder Bay-Atikokan riding association.
Riding association president Judith Mongrain said candidate applications are reviewed by the central party, so she couldn’t say for certain whether others initially put their names forward.
Mongrain was pleased to see Monteith-Farrell pursue a second term, saying she had distinguished herself with strong constituency work and advocacy for the region at Queen’s Park.
“She’s got a good reputation as a helpful MPP,” she said.
While the third-party Liberals have outperformed the Official Opposition NDP in recent Ontario polling, Mongrain was optimistic the party will hang on to the seat.
“You never take anything for granted, but we’re quite pleased with the numbers we see, particularly in the Northwest,” she said.
The NDP's Thunder Bay-Atikokan nomination meeting will be held virtually at 7:30 p.m. on June 2.
The next provincial election is set to take place on or before June 2, 2022.
