KENORA, Ont -- A correctional officer at the Kenora Jail that was taken hostage by inmates has been released.
An official with the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services on Friday confirmed the guard had been freed and has been taken to hospital for assessment. The extent of any injuries were not disclosed.
The ministry had been mobilizing its institutional crisis intervention teams to respond to the situation and negotiators had been deployed to the jail.
"We want to thank all the frontline staff at the Kenora jail that worked to secure the release of the correctional officer," ministry spokesman Greg Flood said in a statement.
"We also want to thank local first responders that attended the facility to assist."
Flood had previously said the situation was contained to the secure part of the jail and there was no threat to the community.
