THUNDER BAY – It was an exhilarating Sunday for some local kids as they got an opportunity to learn about one of Canada's most beloved sports in the company of none other than Santa Claus himself.

The Port Arthur Curling Centre recently held its first-ever "Learn to Curl with Santa" event on Sunday, with the aim of getting kids interested in the sport of curling, while also raising funds for the upkeep and maintenance of the centre.

Organizers said the event was a resounding success, and hope that it becomes an annual tradition that will attract more kids and families to the sport.

Attendees were treated to a pancake breakfast, followed by a fun-filled morning of curling lessons with Santa making an appearance to add to the festive spirit.

One of the organizers, Tina Holmquist, said the idea came as a way to make up for Thunder Bay youth being unable to learn about curling during the pandemic lockdown.

“COVID took a lot and the high schools weren't able to come with their youth, and so this was a good way of getting the children to come without paying the $200 fee for the season from October to April,” she said. “So it's just exposure out on the rink.”

The Port Arthur Curling Centre is a 136-year-old heritage building, and, as such, it takes a lot to maintain and keep it open, so organizers were thrilled to see so much support come from the community.

89 children signed up for the event, and Roman Naidoo, one of the organizers, said that the response and energy from the kids in attendance has been overwhelmingly positive.

“The vibrance in this room tells its own story, and the vibe on the ice tells you a story also,” he said. “If you take a look around, it’s all over. There’s excitement in the air.”
