THUNDER BAY — After putting a call out for adult volunteers, the Waverley Resource Library is now looking for kids who want to improve their reading skills this fall.
"Sometimes kids don't always want to read with their parents, grandparents or guardians. And that's OK," said Patience Hanlan, one of the coordinators of the Thunder Bay Public Library's reading buddies program.
Kids will get matched with a buddy so they can get familiar with and be comfortable practicing reading with a new person.
"I always encourage kids to read anything. It doesn't have to be a novel. It doesn't have to be an easy read. It can be a history book as long as we're interacting with books," Hanlan said.
Registration for the program is on Aug. 22 for kids in grades 1-3.
The program runs for seven weeks and will take place on Tuesdays for one hour at 5:30 p.m., with a second at 6:30 p.m., and starts on Sept. 12 ending on Oct. 24.
All adult buddies participating in the program have had a police criminal record check (level one) completed before being accepted.
