THUNDER BAY - A woman charged with second-degree murder in connection with the 2016 death of Leslie Moonias, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Kirsten Faith Wesley entered a plea of not guilty to the charge of second-degree murder and a guilty plea to manslaughter in a Thunder Bay courtroom on Wednesday following a pre-trial hearing.

Wesley is represented by attorney, Gil Labine and the guilty plea was accepted by Justice Elaine Burton and Crown attorney, Rob Kozak.

“I am satisfied on the basis of the evidence I heard that she is guilty of the act,” Burton said.

But Burton added that it would be difficult to prove, based on the evidence, that the act falls in line with the charge of second-degree murder.

Police were called to a McKellar Street address on the morning of Sept. 8, 2016, where Moonias, 20, was found dead. Wesley, who was 20 years old at the time, was detained a short time later for questioning before being charged with second-degree murder.

According to a Police release issued a short time after, the matter was related to a domestic violence incident.

Wesley was released on bail in September 2016, but has been in custody since a breach of bail conditions in February 2017.

A sentencing hearing for Wesley is scheduled to take place in Thunder Bay on Sept. 14, 2018.
