THUNDER BAY — St. Margaret Elementary School was under a shelter-in-place because of a fire at a nearby duplex.

The Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board issued the notice as a precautionary measure because of significant smoke in the neighbourhood.

Speaking to Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, they indicate that a duplex on Matthews Street was the source of the smoke after a fire started in the kitchen while the resident was cooking.

One person was home during the incident, but was able to escape and was checked out at the regional hospital for smoke inhalation.

The main floor of the home suffered extensive water and smoke damage.

The school turned off their HVAC systems and closed windows to keep as much smoke as possible out of the school.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue would like to remind members of the public that working smoke alarms and a regularly practiced fire escape plan are essential to ensuring the safety of families in the event of a fire.
