La Vérendrye high school lockdown was a false alarm

The incident was not connected to a threat made earlier against St. Patrick High School

THUNDER BAY – A second Thunder Bay high school was placed under lockdown briefly on Monday, but it turned out to be a false alarm.

Students at  École secondaire catholique de La Vérendrye, on High Street, initially went into lockdown after an emergency button in an office on the side of the school used for Seventh Fire secondary school programming was accidentally activated.

A spokesperson for Conseil scolaire de district catholique des Aurores boréales said the building went from lockdown to hold-and-secure protocol about half an hour later.

When the Thunder Bay Police Service responded, it was confirmed that the alarm had been activated by accident.

A cover has now been placed over the button to reduce the risk of inadvertent activation.

The spokesperson said Monday's incident was not connected to the threat that forced the imposition of hold-and-secure earlier Monday at St. Patrick High School.

Police were also dispatched to La Vérendrye last June, after the alarm on the Seventh Fire side was pushed by accident, according to Conseil scolaire de district catholique des Aurores boréales.
