Labour Day Picnic takes over Current River Park

Approximately 1,200 people were expected to stop by the Labour Day Picnic at Current River Park on Cumberland St.

THUNDER BAY — Another long weekend tradition took place on Monday, the Labour Day Picnic.

Approximately 1,200 people were expected to stop by the Labour Day Picnic at Current River Park on Cumberland St.

Carlos Santander-Maturana, president of the Thunder Bay and District Labour Council, says this year's theme was all about recovery.

"What we are trying to do is to ensure that the members of the labour community and those ones who are not organized are getting the understanding and the tools that we need to have in order to face off just recovery."

He noted many unions have recently taken strike action at negotiations.

"We need to share information, we need to share strategies in order to face off on a very unfriendly provincial government ahead of the field, seeing everyone out here supporting you for me as a president and for the member of the council and the delegates," Santander-Maturana said.

Santander-Maturana is happy the long-standing tradition of the picnic brings out many members of the community "To remember our accomplishments during the year and also the challenges that we had to face and put all the labour community together."
