THUNDER BAY — With another significant rainfall predicted for the Thunder Bay area, the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority has issued a Flood Outlook Statement.
These statements are issued to provide early notice whenever there's potential for flooding based on weather forecasts, snow melt, high wind or other conditions.
Despite the prospect of 25 to 50 mm of rain – or more – from Wednesday night through to Friday, the LRCA the statement issued Wednesday afternoon said "widespread flooding is not anticipated."
However, fast-flowing water and flooding may occur in low-lying areas or on roadways in flood-prone areas.
The authority noted that some area watercourses are already high because of the spring melt, and can be expected to rise in response to any amount of precipitation.
This is especially likely in the upper watersheds where there is remaining snowpack.
For the past 13 days, the Neebing-McIntyre Floodway has been diverting water to Lake Superior.
This is the first time this has happened in the last five years.
