THUNDER BAY — A Lakehead University lecturer has received a prestigious award from the Royal Canadian Geographic Society.
Randy Wilkie was awarded the Alex Trebek Medal.
It acknowledges the late Jeopardy host's support for the RCGS, particularly its educational programs for Canadian youth.
Wilkie is a lecturer in LU's Faculty of Education.
Having taught geography in high school, he now "teaches teachers how to teach geography," the university said in a news release Monday.
Wilkie has also helped to develop the Ontario geography curriculum and geographic literacy programs for the Ministry of Education, has conducted workshops and has created geographic teaching posters.
He's also presented on classroom teaching strategies throughout Ontario, to the National Council for Geographic Education in Washington, DC and online through virtual presentations.
Wilkie became a Fellow of the RCGS in 2018.
He has received numerous other awards for exemplary efforts in the classroom at the local, provincial and international levels.
