THUNDER BAY — The Lakehead Minor Hockey League has expelled the Neebing Minor Hockey Association.
The announcement comes in a social media post attributed to LMHL.
LMHL is the governing body in Thunder Bay for players in the U11 and U13 age divisions.
A letter addressed to LMHL members by president Joe Kompon alleges that Neebing Minor Hockey is facing "governance challenges that jeopardizes their ability to run successful hockey programs."
The letter goes on to outline half a dozen specific concerns that LMHL has identified.
"Given these governance and financial risks to its players, teams and members, LMHL has assessed that it can no longer in good faith assign players or teams to its [Neebing Minor Hockey] organization, nor continue to endorse their hockey organization to potential registrants," it states.
"As a result, by a unanimous vote of the remaining members and executive officers we have voted to expel the Neebing Minor Hockey Association from the league. Neebing will be welcome to reapply for membership after they have implemented the required internal changes."
According to the letter, current Neebing registrants will have a chance to request a transfer to a different organization.
Spokespersons for Lakehead Minor Hockey and Neebing Minor Hockey were not yet available Tuesday afternoon for comment.
