Lakehead Public Schools announces new student trustees (2 Photos)

The non-voting student trustees begin their terms this August.

THUNDER BAY — The Lakehead District school Board has introduced its two new student trustees.

Hammarskjold High School Grade 11 student Annika Finlayson is the Indigenous student trustee, and will begin a one-year term starting in August 2021.

She replaces Keira Essex who graduates this year from Superior CVI.

Annika's home community is Long Lake #58 First Nation,.

The board said that in addition to her academic achievements, she brings knowledge of her school community through participating in the Indigenous Student Council, as well as knowledge and skills gained from volunteer experience at home, and with the local organization Roots to Harvest.

Annika has also volunteered as the lead dancer at a community powwow,.

The other new student trustee is Mehar Mago, who's in Grade 10 at Superior CVI.

She begins a two-year term in August 2021.

Mehar replaces Simran Talpade who graduates this year.

She has participated on the Student Advisory Council, the basketball team and the badminton team.

The board said she also brings knowledge and skills gained from volunteer experiences with the India Canada Association, the Thunder Bay Multicultural Society and the Keewaytinook Okimakanak First Nations Tribal Council.

The Indigenous student trustee and the student trustee, the board said, represent all Lakehead Public Schools students in accordance with provincial legislation, and are non-voting members.
