THUNDER BAY – The community has lost one of its most ardent supporters.
Bruce Nugent, 52, a long-time communications officer at Lakehead Public Schools and well-known Rotarian, died suddenly on Sunday morning.
Nugent, who was born in Terrace Bay, Ont., had previously worked for the Thunder Bay Public Health Unit.
Ian MacRae, director of education at Lakehead Public Schools, told board employees in an email issued on Sunday night he was deeply saddened at the news.
“Bruce truly represented all the best of Lakehead Public Schools. He was consistently kind, conscientious and respectful in his personal and professional relationships. We are profoundly devastated by his passing,” MacRae said.
The news of his passing came as a shock to many in the community.
Michelle Probizanski, superintendent of education at the public board, was quick to offer her condolences on social media to Nugent’s wife, Sharlene, and his two sons, Liam and Aidan.
“Bruce was one of the most kind, loyal, and compassionate people I have ever had the privilege to work alongside. He made me laugh every single day, was fiercely proud of his family and was an amazing colleague,” she said.
Ellen Chambers, chair of the board of trustees, called it a sad day.
“Bruce was an amazing person. He made LPS shine in a myriad of ways. I’m heartbroken,” Chambers said.
Fellow trustee George Saarinen said Nugent will be missed.
“He was so community focused, was passionate, loved the staff and students and knew so many people,” Saarinen wrote in a Twitter post.
“Bruce Nugent, you were and remain a shining start for (Lakehead Public Schools). It’s been an honour to have worked with you.”
Funeral arrangements are pending.
