Students are contributing $11 million for the project.

THUNDER BAY — Lakehead University is looking for donations from the community to complete fundraising for the Wolf Den, its new athletics faciity already under construction.

The university has pegged the cost of the complex at $12.8 million,

In an announcement Monday, LU said students will contribute $11 million toward its construction, leaving the university to find the rest from other sources.

The 30,000 square-foot facility–scheduled for completion next year–is being built adjacent to the existing C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse.

It will include a multi-purpose gym, a modern weightlifting area, an aerobics studio, a student study areas, a lounge and a wellness clinic, as well as other facilities.

In a 2018 referendum, students voted overwhelmingly in support of covering most of the cost.

"This is an exciting project that we are proud to be part of," said LU Student Union Vice-President Farhan Yousaf.

The Wolf Den will also be available for community use.

"Together with the Fieldhouse and the Hangar, [it] will ensure that Lakehead University Athletics continues to provide dedicated space and programming to meet the health, wellness and recreation needs of our students and the wider community," Athletics Director Tom Warden said.

"As we move forward with this campaign, we hope our community members, corporate community and friends of the university will see the value of this facility for the region and the city, and help make this project happen."

Information about how to contribute to the campaign is available online at lakeheadu.ca/wolfden.
