THUNDER BAY — For nearly two decades in the Lakehead District Public School Board system, Debra Parks has worked as an attendance counsellor and social worker with students in both elementary and secondary schools.
In recognition of her accomplishments, the Ontario Association of Social Workers has presented her with its School Social Work Achievement Award.
The award was presented at a recent provincial symposium in Woodbridge, Ontario.
An announcement from the Lakehead board says Parks has shown dedication to mental health and well-being initiatives, and has been an integral member of the its Mental Health and Wellness Team, Tragic Events Team, and Mental Health Steering Committee.
In addition, she has served with Thunder Bay's Youth Suicide Prevention Task Force.
"Debra is always willing to support schools during times of tragedy and she has supported a number of external organizations and committees as well," the statement said.
Colleen Kappel, superintendent of education, said Parks is "very deserving of this special award from her provincial peers. She is extremely well respected by all staff and community members."
Kappel added that Parks' dedication to students extends to the community, as she works closely with mental health and social service agency partners and maintains professional networks.
