Lakehead University celebrates Wolfie’s birthday

The mascot celebrates his 24th anniversary on Friday.

THUNDER BAY — Lakehead University’s mascot, Wolfie, turned 24 on Friday.

To mark the occasion, the university held a party on Thursday for students and children at the local daycare centre.

The event featured games, desserts, activities and more at the Agora building on campus.

“We’ve invited the Lakehead University Nanabijou Child Care Centre to come celebrate with us for the first hour of the birthday,” said Hartley Mendelsohn, one of the university’s student success advisors.

“So, lots of kids (are) enjoying a lot of excitement and celebrating Wolfie’s birthday. We have a lot of fun with them and as they take off, we move some of our activities to be a little bit more adult for our university students who are going to come and join us.”

Some of these activities for older students included making friendship bracelets and pulling out some of the university’s games with smaller pieces that staff didn’t want all the daycare kids potentially playing with or swallowing.

He said there was just a lot of excitement for the birthday, with lots of friendly faces, smiling and having a good time.

“It’s such an awesome event. (It) brings up the spirits of everyone as the weather starts getting a little bit better,” said Mendelsohn.

“Lots of students are stressed out with final projects coming up and exams on the horizon, so it’s really awesome to get a chance to just celebrate and kind of forget about school for a little bit and just really enjoy and appreciate each other’s company while celebrating Wolfie’s birthday.”

Mendelsohn said the university has held this celebration for around five years now.
