THUNDER BAY — The makers of Lysol have donated five million disinfecting wipes to Lakehead University.

The university, in turn, says it's providing hundreds of thousands of the wipes to other local organizations including Confederation College, the Victorian Order of Nurses, the Canadian Mental Health Association, George Jeffrey Children's Treatment Centre, Camp Quality and the Ignace Food Bank.

The United Way is also contacting its partners to see if any other agencies require Lysol wipes.

Four tractor-trailer loads of the product were sent to Lakehead by the manufacturer, Reckitt.

LU's Alumni and Annual Giving Director, Mark Tilbury, said students, faculty and staff will use the wipes throughout the campus.

They'll be available in high traffic areas in particular, such as Student Central and the Wolf Den, as well as other popular spots.

Reckitt spokesperson Corrie Mueller said the company is pleased to help Lakehead in its efforts to ensure a safe back-to-school environment this winter.

Tilbury expressed gratitude for the donation.

Confederation College will receive a total of 600,000 wipes,  which staff will use to maximize disinfection in classrooms, labs and public areas such as the residence, the Children and Family Centre, and the Wellness Centre.

The college will also offer wipes to students who can't afford to buy them.

"It's wonderful to receive this contribution from partners like Lysol and Lakehead University, which will greatly assist us in managing our response to the pandemic," said Rob Zuback, director of advancement and external relations.

United Way CEO Albert Brulé noted that non-profit service providers have been challenged to meet the needs of their clients while ensuring public health measures are observed through enhanced cleaning protocols.
