Lakehead University Indigenous students hold online graduation

Over 100 Indigenous students will celebrate their academic success.

THUNDER BAY — Lakehead University will conduct an online Indigenous student graduation celebration at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 16.

The Office of Indigenous Initiatives says this year's graduation class includes 180 self-identified Indigenous students, or about 10 per cent of the university's graduating cohort.

They have successfully completed their studies in a variety of programs including medicine, law, engineering, business, nursing, Indigenous learning, criminology, social work, psychology, education, accounting, social justice, computer science and women's studies, among others.

Perry Bellegarde, National Chief of the Assembly of Chief Nations, will be the keynote speaker.

There are also a number of other speakers, including Fort William First Nation Chief Peter Collins, Councillor Ted Williams of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, Lakehead President Moira McPherson, and other university leaders.
