THUNDER BAY -- With September just a few days away students can already hear the school bells ringing, and if you're a New Law student, you were heard those bells ringing Tuesday.
First year students gathered in the Bora Laskin Auditorium as the Dean of Law, Angelique EagleWoman welcomed them to begin the new school year.
The new dean was brought to Lakehead University May of 2016 and knew that the school was a right fit for her right away.
The school only accepts up to 60 students per year, the smallest class size out of every Canadian law school, which allows the university to teach law in a new and different way.
Law professors work with practitioners to create hands-on, realistic learning opportunities for the students. So they learn by doing not just in a classroom.
Much like the Northern Ontario School of Medicine the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law is a law program for the north and rural communities.
The school also dedicates a lot of its studies to Aboriginal Law.
The innovative curriculum meets all requirements and standards of any law degree program in Ontario, but all graduates will be a part of the Integrated Practice Curriculum, which allows them to be eligible for licensing in Ontario right after school.
There are 16 Law programs in Canada and many are now trying to adapt and bring in the study of Aboriginal law, which has caused many to turn to Lakehead and reach out about their teaching methods.
Proving the need for aboriginal lawyers and smaller market law firms and that Lakehead has been going in the right direction these past few years.
