THUNDER BAY — For the fourth year in a row, Lakehead University has scored in the top half of Canada's primarily undergraduate schools in Maclean's magazine's annual university rankings.

Among Ontario's five mainly undergraduate universities, Lakehead tied for first place with Trent University.

The rankings are based on a series of performance indicators compiled from various data sources as well as surveys of students, university faculty and administrators, high school guidance counsellors, and business people.

Lakehead placed eighth out of 19 undergraduate schools across the country.

Mt. Allison University in New Brunswick, which annually finishes at or near the top, took first place for the fourth consecutive year.

Lakehead did well in this year's rankings in several categories, including having the highest graduation rate in its category nationally.

It also placed first in Ontario in student awards (tied), faculty awards, and total library expenses; second in student/faculty ratio, social sciences & humanities grants, total research dollars, scholarships & bursaries, and library acquisitions; third in medical/science grants, operating budget and reputation.

Nationally, Lakehead ranked ninth for reputation, and 16th for student satisfaction.

LU President Moira McPherson said she's pleased.

In a prepared statement, McPherson said "These rankings recognize our ongoing and renowned commitment to providing a transformative university experience, grounded in exceptional scholarship and unique student potential."

Elsewhere in Northern Ontario, Laurentian University ranked 15th out of 19 schools for reputation and 19th for student satisfaction.  Nipissing University was 19th for reputation and third for student satisfaction.

Lakehead will hold a virtual open house on Wednesday, Dec. 9, with registration details to be announced shortly.
