Lakehead University will hold an online Indigenous grad celebration

About 200 graduates have been invited to the Wednesday evening event.

THUNDER BAY — Indigenous students at Lakehead University will celebrate their graduation at an online ceremony on Wednesday.

The university says about 200 graduates have been invited to participate.

They have completed their studies in a variety of programs including nursing, law, medicine, Indigenous learning, criminology, social work, psychology, and education.

The keynote speaker at the Wednesday evening event will be Nadia George, an award-winning public speaker and actor, environmentalist and media personality based in Toronto.

George has over a decade of professional experience in social services, specializing in trauma-informed care.

There's also a large number of other speakers, including Chief Ted Williams of Chippewas of Rama First Nation; Thunder Bay Métis Council president Wendy Houston;  Councillor Tannis Kastern of Fort William First Nation; Matthew Bombardier of the LU Native Students Association; LU Alumni Association vice-president Yolanda Wanakamik; Denise Baxter, vice-provost, Indigenous Initiatives; and Lakehead president Moira McPherson.

Elder Trish Monague from Beausoleil First Nation will offer a prayer, while Elder Beatrice Twance-Hynes from Biigtigong First Nation will share an honour song.
